Yinka Shonibare (MBE) have an installation pièce of the Benin Invasion which found its way to " The Benin Royal, Emowwa, Mowa museum before it was closed titled “Monument to the Restitution of the Mind and Soul” to Benin City" 2024.
When would have been the right time for Nigéria to know that Edo State had acquired an artwork of Yinka Shonibare ?
Yinka Shonibare is not just any artist.
His works are found in many important locations and museums in many countries in the world.
His works are used for research notably on colonialism and post - colonialism.
He is a renowned multcultural artist, whose
artworks are also known for theme of résistance, to mention a few e.g "Scramble for Africa" and his artwork at Trafalgar Square, London " Ship on a bottle " among others.
Born in 1962 in London, England and moved to Lagos, Nigeria at the age of three. He lives and works in London. Shonibare was a Turner Prize nominee in 2004 and was elected as a Royal Academician by the Royal Academy, London in 2013. He was awarded the decoration of Most Excellent Order of the British Empire or MBE in 2004 and Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire or CBE in 2019. Shonibare received the prestigious Art Icon Award from Whitechapel Gallery, London and an honorary degree from The Courtauld Institute, London in 2021.
